Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will continue its political activities and cannot be silenced by legal action taken by members of President Mohamed Muizzu’s family.
Solih made the remarks in a post on X on Wednesday, following civil suits filed by the president’s family against MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and senior party activist Mariyam Zubair.
According to Solih, the lawsuits are intended to suppress political activity by the opposition. He stated that this is not the first time the party has faced such challenges.
“This is not new to the MDP. And we will not back down from such a thing,” Solih said. “We are united. The MDP will continue to work on behalf of the people.”
The statement comes amid reports of internal disagreements within the MDP. However, Solih indicated that the party remains committed to its political agenda and will respond collectively to attempts to hinder its activities.
