Planting of Maldivian coconut palms has begun along the redeveloped section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu as work enters its final stage.
Preparations are underway to open the section of the road between the Presidential Jetty and Barceló Nasandhura after asphalt paving was completed.
The road has been widened to four lanes, with parking prohibited on both sides. To provide parking in the area, part of the lagoon was reclaimed and space for 500 motorcycles was developed.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously said trees would be planted before the road is reopened.
"The plan is to plant beautiful trees, keeping both sides neat and pleasant," the President said.
During his tenure as Mayor of Malé, date palms were planted along an earlier redeveloped section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu.
The expansion project is being carried out in five phases. Work began in August last year.
The first phase, covering the section between the Presidential Jetty and the Maldives Monetary Authority area, was completed in early December. The second phase, extending to the North Harbour area, was completed between December and February.
The project was awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for MVR 144 million and is scheduled to be completed within 455 days.
