President Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a press conference will be held on 3 May, coinciding with International Press Freedom Day.
The announcement was made during the Rayyithunna Eku podcast, broadcast every Thursday by the President’s Office.
This would be President Muizzu’s first formal press conference in over a year. He last addressed the media in January 2024.
“I invite journalists and media to prepare for that day. Prepare your questions and start writing. You can ask any question,” he said during the podcast.
President Muizzu stated that he has always prioritised the dissemination of information, both in his current role and in previous positions. He also addressed public concern regarding the lack of press conferences during his presidency, attributing it to his focus on achieving results.
“A lot of the time, almost every day, I prioritise work, getting results. I always say all my focus is on results,” he said.
The President also expressed interest in further public engagement. He said he intends to take part in a youth-focused programme in the coming days and is open to accepting invitations from television stations for appearances.
Since taking office on 17 November 2023, President Muizzu has held three official press conferences:
-
3 December 2023: Briefing at the airport upon returning from the COP28 Summit in Turkey
-
5 December 2023: Press briefing at the President’s Office on Cabinet decisions
-
13 January 2024: Airport briefing following his state visit to China
