The High Court has overturned the Criminal Court’s decision to seize the passport of former Housing Minister Akram Kamaluddin.

The Criminal Court had previously issued two separate orders to confiscate Akram’s passport in connection with investigations into alleged corruption related to the Binveriya and Gedhoruveriya housing schemes implemented during the previous administration.

The passport was first ordered to be seized for one month starting 20 December 2024. A subsequent order on 19 January 2025 extended the seizure until 18 February 2025.

However, the High Court ruled that the Criminal Court had issued these orders in violation of established judicial and legal procedures.

In a related decision, the High Court also overturned the order to seize the passport of former Senior Executive Director at the Ministry of Housing, Mohamed Arif.

The Prosecutor General, Abbas Shareef, has instructed relevant investigative bodies to continue examining alleged irregularities and suspected corruption linked to the previous administration’s housing allocation schemes.

Investigations are also ongoing into other cases, including one involving Mohamed Fazeel, the brother of former Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, who was reportedly allocated a plot of land in Hulhumalé under questionable circumstances.
