Former President Mohamed Nasheed has reiterated his position that the root cause of many problems in the Maldives lies in the presidential system of governance.

In a post published on social media platform ‘X’ Sunday, Nasheed stated that he believes the system of government, rather than political leadership, is at the centre of governance issues. He argued that a switch to a parliamentary system and preferential voting could address several challenges currently faced in the country.

Nasheed, who has long advocated for a parliamentary model, reiterated his support for this change. During his tenure as Speaker of the 19th Parliament, Nasheed actively promoted a parliamentary system and had previously led efforts within the legislature to move away from the current presidential model.

Although Nasheed currently resides abroad, he continues to participate in political discussions and policy debates.

Meanwhile, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed support for electoral reform, specifically backing a move from the existing two-round presidential election to a single round of preferential voting.
