Fayyaz joins Ali Azim’s mayoral primary bid

Fayyaz Ismail, who resigned as Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) chairman two days ago, joined the campaign in support of Ali Azim in the Male’ mayoral primary on Tuesday evening.
Fayyaz had not declared support for Azim while serving as chairman. He joined the campaign publicly at a campaign event held in Male’ on Tuesday night, where he also delivered remarks.
Azim was present alongside Tuesday at the event. Former and current MDP MPs and members of the party’s National Assembly attended, including elected representatives and National Assembly members.
The incumbent mayor, Adam Azim, is contesting the MDP ticket for the mayoral seat in the March local council elections.
In related endorsements, former President Mohamed Nasheed confirmed support for Ali Azim, while Fayyaz's public campaign appearance marked a shift in his position since stepping down from party leadership.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, an MDP adviser, has not declared support for any candidate. Party sources in the MDP said Solih’s backing is likely for Adam Azim, though this has not been confirmed publicly.
