Nasheed confirms resolution of MDP internal dispute
Nasheed thanked Fayyaz Ismail for efforts to resolve the matter and acknowledged the role of Solih and party President Abdulla Shahid.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the internal dispute within the Maldivian Democratic Party has been resolved.
Nasheed made the statement in a post on X on Saturday, a day after former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also announced that discussions among party leaders had led to an agreement.
In his post, Nasheed thanked Fayyaz Ismail for efforts to resolve the matter and acknowledged the role of Solih and party President Abdulla Shahid.
“I would like to thank Fayyaz Ismail for his work in resolving the internal disagreements within the MDP. I also congratulate President Solih and the party’s President, Abdulla Shahid,” Nasheed stated.
The dispute within the party began over the agenda for a rally held to mark the party’s performance in the recent council elections.
Disagreements emerged among supporters of party leaders regarding responsibility for the election outcome. Nasheed and Fayyaz did not attend the rally, with their faction stating that a decision to include them as speakers had been changed. Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa denied the claim.
Tensions increased following the removal of Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed and Legal Director Ahmed Maaroof. Ghafoor stated that the removals were due to a lack of cooperation.
Members aligned with Nasheed subsequently submitted a request signed by 55 National Council members to hold a meeting to consider Ghafoor’s removal. The meeting has been scheduled for Monday.
Following the agreement among party leaders, it is expected that the motion to remove Ghafoor will not proceed.
