Nasheed, Solih meet to 'reconcile' MDP differences
This is the first such meeting between the two leaders since their relationship deteriorated.
Former presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met on Wednesday to discuss the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential ticket and other differences, party sources said.
The meeting is being held at the MDP headquarters, G. Niusha, and was ongoing at the time of reporting. Photographs of the meeting were shared through MDP media channels.
The meeting follows remarks made earlier by Solih during a gathering with supporters in HDh. Kudahuvadhoo, where he said he would meet Nasheed to seek a resolution to their differences.
This is the first such meeting between the two leaders since their relationship deteriorated.
Following his defeat in the MDP presidential primary, Nasheed worked with opposition parties against the government. Subsequently, Ali Azim, aligned with Nasheed at the time, was expelled from the MDP. Nasheed’s faction later left the party and formed the Democrats.
The Democrats did not secure significant support in the presidential election and failed to win seats in the parliamentary elections. After these results, Nasheed rejoined the MDP on 23 June.
Nasheed served as President of the Maldives for three years and led the MDP for nearly 15 years. He was the party’s presidential candidate in 2008, 2013 and 2018.
In 2018, Solih was awarded the MDP presidential ticket through the party congress due to Nasheed being ineligible because of a prison sentence. Differences between the two leaders increased after Solih assumed leadership within the party.
