Former Presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Mohamed Nasheed have congratulated incumbent Malé Mayor Adam Azim on securing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket to contest the Malé mayoral election, following the party primary held on Friday.

Adam Azim won the MDP primary against former parliamentarian Ali Azim. Provisional results showed that Adam Azim secured a clear majority of the votes cast.

Both Nasheed and Solih posted messages of congratulations on X on Friday evening. Nasheed, who supported Ali Azim in the primary, congratulated Adam Azim on his victory and also acknowledged Ali Azim’s participation in the contest. In his post, Nasheed said the party had conducted a well-organised primary.

Solih supported Adam Azim in the primary but did not participate publicly in campaign activities. In a message shared following the result, Solih referred to the outcome as recognition of the work carried out by Adam Azim during his two years as mayor. Solih also noted that Adam Azim had served as Managing Director of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company during his administration.

In a separate post, Adam Azim said he had engaged with residents of Malé during the campaign and listened to their concerns and proposals. He stated that, if re-elected, he would seek to implement those views in his work as mayor.

Nasheed took an active role in Ali Azim’s campaign and spoke at campaign events during the primary period.

Former Defence Minister Moosa Ali Jaleel has been announced as the ruling People’s National Congress candidate for the Malé mayoral election and received the party’s ticket without a primary. Financial analyst Ismail Zariyand is also contesting the mayoral race with the backing of the People’s National Front, supported by former President Abdulla Yameen.
