Terrorism is ideological disease without religion, Shaheem says

Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has strongly condemned terrorism, calling it an “ideological disease” that has no connection to religion, particularly Islam.
He emphasised that combating terrorism requires spreading accurate knowledge rooted in Islamic teachings and values.
Speaking at the Moderation program jointly organised by the National Counter Terrorism Center and the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition, Shaheem delivered a passionate address on the roots of extremism and the Islamic response to it.
“Terrorism is not just a physical threat — it is an intellectual and spiritual corruption,” he said. “The real solution lies in acquiring knowledge from authentic sources.”
Highlighting the legacy of Islamic scholars and leaders throughout history, Shaheem stressed their role not only as teachers but also as moral and social guides during times of turmoil. He underscored the importance of parents as the first line of defense in shaping the values of society.
“There is no room for terrorism in Islam,” he stated. “Preserving a single life is one of the highest goals of Islamic Sharia. Saving one soul is like saving all of humanity.”
Shaheem firmly rejected the notion that Islam permits the killing of innocent people, pointing out that Islamic teachings strictly prohibit harming women, children, the elderly, and worshippers of other faiths, especially in their places of worship.
“These teachings remind us that Islam’s guiding principles are founded on mercy and peace, not injustice or violence,” he said.
He also clarified the distinction between jihad and terrorism, noting that jihad is a structured and state-sanctioned effort aimed at protection and justice, not individual or random acts of violence.
“The purpose of jihad is to protect the people and the nation. Terrorism, in all its forms, is forbidden in Islam,” Shaheem emphasised.
