Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Mariyam Mariya confirmed on Wednesday that there are currently 48 political employees in the ministry.

She made the statement in response to a question from Keyodhoo MP Mohamed Niushad during a parliamentary session on Tuesday. The inquiry focused on the number of political appointments in the ministry.

During the session, questions were also raised regarding the employees of AgroNat, a state-owned enterprise the government has decided to dissolve. MPs asked about the status of these employees and the basis for continuing salary payments.

Minister Mariya stated that AgroNat staff will be engaged in agricultural work designated for Alif Dhaal Ariyadhoo, a location allocated for coconut palm cultivation. She added that the employees will undergo some training before being deployed to various islands for work.

According to government figures shared this week, the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has 48 political appointees, while the Ministry of Cities, Local Governance and Public Works has 81.

As of May 2024, data from multiple ministries and the President’s Office indicate that there are over 1,100 political appointees serving in various roles across government institutions.

While the government had earlier stated that it would not increase the number of political employees beyond 700, an official total has yet to be publicly disclosed. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held a press conference recently in which he said the full count would be shared, but the figure has not yet been announced.
