Maldives schedules local council elections for April
He also said the Commission is exploring ways to conduct the elections at minimal cost.
The Elections Commission has announced that local council and women’s development committee elections are scheduled to be held in April.
Commission Chairperson Mohamed Zahid confirmed the timeline in an interview with state media PSM, stating that preparations are already underway. The Commission has begun collecting data necessary for candidate nominations across constituencies.
Zahid noted that the main challenge in the preparation process is securing a suitable building to serve as the election headquarters. He said the usual locations, including Dharubaaruge and old Jamaluddin School building, are currently unavailable, which has created logistical difficulties in Malé.
He also said the Commission is exploring ways to conduct the elections at minimal cost. Zahid stated that all aspects of the election process, except for voting and counting, will be carried out digitally.
