Over 700 complaints filed on voter register for council elections
The complaints included requests to update addresses, record changes of residence, and remove the names of deceased persons from the register.
More than 700 complaints have been submitted regarding the register of eligible voters for the local council and Women’s Development Committee elections scheduled for 4 April.
The Elections Commission opened the period for filing complaints on the voter register and closed submissions at 3:00 pm on Sunday. According to the commission, a total of 779 complaints were received by the deadline.
The complaints included requests to update addresses, record changes of residence, and remove the names of deceased persons from the register.
The commission said approximately 295,000 people are eligible to vote in the local council elections.
Online nominations for candidates were opened on Saturday and will remain open until 1 February at 3:30 pm.
The elections will be held to elect members of local councils and members of the Women’s Development Committees across 225 constituencies.
The Elections Commission said a total of 621 ballot boxes will be deployed for the polls. Of these, 321 ballot boxes will be placed in the atolls, while 240 will be located in Malé, Hulhumalé and Villingili. Fifty ballot boxes will be set up at resorts, three at industrial workplaces, and five in prisons. Two ballot boxes will be placed overseas, in the Maldives’ diplomatic missions in the Maldives and Malaysia.
