The Broadcasting Commission has dismissed its Secretary General, Mariyam Zeeniya, following a prior suspension earlier this month.
Zeeniya was suspended for three days on 20 May. The suspension was issued on the grounds of not cooperating with decisions made by the commission and for reportedly displaying disrespect towards the body.
Zeeniya confirmed her dismissal on Sunday.
Her removal comes amid ongoing internal tensions within the Broadcasting Commission. The suspension followed a petition submitted by commission staff to Parliament. The petition alleged interference by the commission's chairperson and some members in the duties of senior officials, including the Secretary General and departmental directors.
In a separate development, the commission’s IT officer, Ahmed Fazeel, was also suspended last Thursday. According to the commission, Fazeel’s seven-day suspension is related to an ongoing investigation into a server malfunction. His suspension took place while several employees had left the office in protest over the Secretary General's dismissal.
No further official statements have been issued by the commission at the time of publication.
