Police have launched a special investigation into the power outage that occurred in the Greater Malé Region on Sunday afternoon.
Power disruptions were reported in Malé, Hulhumalé, and Vilimalé at approximately 12:30 p.m., with electricity service partially restored by 1:50 p.m.
According to a statement posted on social media platform X, the Maldives Police Service confirmed the initiation of a formal investigation into the incident. The reason for the outage, according to the State Electric Company (STELCO), was a technical issue. STELCO did not provide further details but stated efforts were ongoing to determine the cause.
The outage disrupted multiple services in affected areas, with reports of temporary service interruptions in both residential and commercial sectors.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu also addressed the issue on X, stating that he had instructed the relevant authorities to take the matter seriously and ensure appropriate steps are taken.
“The government will do everything necessary to arrange the electricity service to prevent such a thing from happening again,” he wrote.
