President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Maldives has been elected as one of the Vice-Presidents of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is scheduled to commence in September 2025.
In a post on his official X account, President Dr Muizzu expressed his gratitude and optimism, stating that the Maldives looks forward to working closely with international partners to ensure the success of the forthcoming General Assembly.
The President reaffirmed the Maldives’ strong commitment to strengthening the multilateral system, particularly as the country celebrates 60 years of membership in the United Nations.
Maldives has also served as the President of the UN General Assembly. The 76th UN General Assembly was chaired by the then Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid who is currently the president of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
