Board confirms eligibility of 3 for police commissioner

The Police Board has confirmed that all three applicants for the vacant post of Commissioner of Police are eligible, following an internal review process.

The position became vacant following the resignation of former Police Commissioner Ali Shujau on 25 April. He retired on 8 May.

Three candidates applied for the role:

  • Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen, currently serving as Acting Commissioner

  • Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhadh Fikri

  • Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shameem, South Police Commander

According to the Maldives Police Service Act, the appointment process includes the following steps:

  • The post must be opened within 90 days of becoming vacant

  • Applicants must hold the rank of Assistant Commissioner or higher

  • The Police Board is responsible for interviewing the applicants and evaluating their qualifications

  • The National Integrity Commission and the Police Professional Standards Command are required to prepare reports on each candidate, which must assess eligibility, reputation, and any potential disqualifications

A member of the Police Board, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the board found all three candidates to be qualified. Their names have been submitted to the Minister responsible for police affairs for further consideration.

The President will make the final appointment based on the recommendation of the Minister and the list provided by the Police Board.
