Maldives president hails new era in Singapore ties

He described the discussions held with Singaporean leaders as a reaffirmation of the shared commitment to deepen bilateral ties.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that his recent state visit to Singapore marks the beginning of a new chapter in the bilateral relations between the Maldives and Singapore.

In a post published on ‘X’ following the conclusion of his visit on Wednesday, President Muizzu said the visit, which coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, had further strengthened cooperation between the Maldives and Singapore.

President Muizzu extended his gratitude to Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, the government, and the people of Singapore for their hospitality during the visit.

He described the discussions held with Singaporean leaders as a reaffirmation of the shared commitment to deepen bilateral ties. The President also noted that three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during the visit.

The MoUs cover the following areas:

  • Higher education and technical and vocational training

  • Environment and sustainability

  • Capacity building

As part of the visit, President Muizzu also participated in an investment forum aimed at promoting investment opportunities in the Maldives to Singaporean businesses and investors.
