Damage has been reported to the fire station building at the airport under construction in F. Magoodhoo.
According to police, the matter was reported earlier on Monday by both the Magoodhoo Council and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) team on site. The case is currently under investigation.
Magoodhoo Council member Abdul Hameed Moosa told Atoll Times that the damage occurred two days ago. He said the windows of the fire station were broken, part of the ceiling was damaged, and a chair inside the building was set on fire.
The council member stated that there are currently no security personnel stationed at the construction site. He added that five foreign workers are present at the site.
The project to build the airport in Magoodhoo was awarded to MTCC on 19 October 2022. The development includes the construction of a 1,500-metre runway at a cost of MVR 231 million.
During the last presidential election, then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced that the runway would be extended to 1,800 metres and that a hotel for jet crews would be developed alongside the airport.
Progress on the project has slowed following the change in administration. Local residents have protested multiple times over the delays.
In addition to the Magoodhoo airport, the government has decided to develop another airport in Nilandhoo, the capital of the atoll, located approximately five minutes by sea from Magoodhoo. That project has also been contracted to MTCC.
