9-year-old in critical condition after Hulhumalé road accident

A nine-year-old girl remains in critical condition after sustaining injuries in a road accident in Hulhumalé Phase 2 on Saturday night.

The accident occurred near Vinares Tower 7 and involved a motorcycle and cars, according to information released by the Maldives Police Service.

Police said CCTV footage from the area showed a motorcycle travelling along Hithigas Magu colliding with a person who was walking from the roadside towards a car parked near Vinares Tower 7.

The motorcycle was being driven by an 18-year-old Maldivian woman, with the nine-year-old girl travelling as a passenger. Both were thrown from the motorcycle following the collision.

According to eyewitness accounts, the car was stopped at the side of the road with its hazard lights on. The driver had closed the boot and was attempting to enter the vehicle when the motorcycle struck the person.

Witnesses said the motorcycle was travelling at speed at the time of the collision.

Following the initial impact, the nine-year-old was reportedly struck by another car approaching from behind.

The child sustained injuries in the accident and remains in critical condition.

The 18-year-old motorcycle rider was also injured in the crash.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
