Chief Justice Muthasim to retire on Monday
The JSC convened on Thursday to finalise the matter and resolved that he would retire with honours next week.
Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan will retire on Monday, according to an announcement by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Thursday.
Muthasim submitted his request for retirement in May. The JSC convened on Thursday to finalise the matter and resolved that he would retire with honours next week.
A commission spokesperson confirmed the decision and stated that further details would be disclosed in the coming days.
The JSC has recommended to the Parliament’s Finance Committee that a retiring Chief Justice be granted a monthly allowance of MVR 70,000 and a lump sum payment of MVR 500,000. In addition to this proposal:
-
Muthasim is set to receive a retirement allowance of MVR 493,600, based on his total years of service as a judge and service to the state.
-
He is also expected to receive a monthly living allowance and transport-related support, including a driver’s salary and fuel expenses.
The committee noted that final decisions on the allowance must be made by the Pay Commission. It is currently unclear whether the Pay Commission has taken any action.
Muthasim has served twice on the Supreme Court bench. He was initially appointed on 10 August 2010 when the first Supreme Court bench was constituted under the new Constitution. He lost the position following legal amendments that reduced the number of judges on the bench.
He returned to the judiciary as Chief Justice on 8 December 2019.
Prior to his judicial appointments, Muthasim held various legal and academic positions:
-
Director of the Legal Section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1994–2001)
-
Dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Law at the Maldives College of Higher Education (2001–2005)
-
Partner at Clipper & Galleon Law Associates (2005–2010)
Muthasim holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Glasgow in Scotland.
