The Maldives Police have launched an investigation into the Askoi Group following renewed allegations that the group collected payments from individuals for Umrah trips that were later cancelled.

The Economic Crime Department of the Maldives Police has urged those affected by the group’s activities to report their experiences. Victims can contact the Economic Crime Unit on 9790048 or submit complaints in person at the Criminal Investigation Department.

This follows a recent complaint involving 28 individuals from Shaviyani Foakaidhoo, who each paid MVR 25,000 to the group for an Umrah trip. The group reportedly instructed the individuals to travel to Malé before the 24th of the month. However, just as they were preparing to purchase tickets, the group informed them that the trip would not proceed. Since then, the group has not responded to calls or messages.

The incident was highlighted on social media by one of the affected individuals.

This is not the first time the Askoi Group has been accused of similar conduct. In 2016, 38 people were stranded at the airport after their visas were not processed in time. In 2018, 168 pilgrims were unable to depart due to temporary tickets, with the group later claiming they were misled by a third-party ticketing company.

Last Ramadan, the Askoi Group was fined MVR 130,000 after collecting payments from clients and cancelling their Umrah trips.

Police stated they are actively investigating the latest case and have encouraged any others affected by similar incidents to come forward with information.
