Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the Maldives would have faced bankruptcy without the financial and trade support provided by India.
In an interview with Asian News International (ANI), Nasheed discussed India’s assistance to the Maldives and the importance of trade relations between the two countries. He said that Indian support had played a key role in helping the Maldives through challenging economic conditions.
“India's timely assistance in every matter has helped stabilise the economy without going into default. This shows not only India's focus on maintaining regional ties, but also the strength of trade ties between the two countries,” Nasheed said.
He further noted that the Maldivian public acknowledges the contribution made by India during difficult times.
Nasheed highlighted the following points in the interview:
-
India is among the fastest-growing economies globally
-
India seeks engagement with other countries rather than isolated growth
-
India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy creates opportunities for the Maldives to align with India’s economic trajectory
-
India is also assisting in the development of the tourism sector
Nasheed also spoke in favour of a Free Trade Agreement between the Maldives and India, stating that such an agreement would contribute to the economic expansion of both countries. He said the agreement would support growth in sectors such as logistics, shipping, and food security, and help the countries achieve their development objectives.
During Nasheed’s presidency, as well as under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the Maldives maintained strong ties with India. Leaders of the current administration, while in opposition, were critical of those ties and launched the 'India Out' campaign in protest of what they saw as increasing Indian influence.
However, since taking office, the government of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has initiated efforts to improve bilateral relations with India.
