Former president Mohamed Nasheed admitted on Monday that his Democrats had supported then-opposition candidate and incumbent President Mohammed Muizzu in the last presidential election.
The Democrats along with Nasheed split from the then ruling MDP and formed the Democrats with 12 members of parliament in the middle of last year, contested the presidential election and came third in the first round. Thus:
-
The party decided not to support any candidate in the second round although they had many discussions about it
-
However, the Democrats had the spirit to find a "non-MDP way" to end the party's rule
In an X post via his unofficial account on Monday, Nasheed said the Democrats had actually supported President Muizzu in the presidential election.
“I think Democrats supported Dr Muizzu because he sees the vision of a peaceful, harmonious Indian Ocean that we see today,” Nasheed said in the post, which coincided with President Muizzu’s visit to the country for the third swearing-in ceremony of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Nasheed, who has always supported a policy close to India, said Maldives' foreign policy changes after every election.
In a post on his official account on Tuesday, Nasheed welcomed the efforts being made by President Mohammed Muizzu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen relations between Maldives and India.
