The Criminal Court on Friday extended the remand period of a man arrested for allegedly threatening to kill President Mohamed Muizzu.
Maseeh Moosa, 25, from Th. Thimarafushi, was arrested on Thursday following a social media post in which he allegedly made death threats against the President. Maldives Police Service confirmed that the court has ordered a 10-day remand.
The arrest followed President Muizzu’s statement on Wednesday night indicating that the government was considering the introduction of the death penalty for those convicted of drug trafficking.
In a post shared after the statement, the President said he had instructed relevant government agencies to conduct further review of the Drugs Act Amendment Bill currently before Parliament. The proposed amendment aims to impose stricter penalties, including capital punishment, for offences related to drug smuggling and trafficking.
President Muizzu stated that one of the government’s key objectives is to eliminate the threat of drugs and to work towards a drug-free generation.
