The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the project to reclaim land for the planned Thulhaadhoo Airport.
The contract, valued at MVR 570 million, was signed between the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure and MTCC on Monday. The scope includes land reclamation and shore protection works for the airport.
The project will reclaim 55.4 hectares of land, with the construction of 2,804 metres of rock revetment and 1,677 metres of geo-bag revetment. The airport will feature a runway measuring 1,800 metres in length and 30 metres in width, compliant with Code 3C standards. The project is expected to be completed within 660 days.
Under the previous administration, plans were also made for an airport in Thulhaadhoo. President Mohamed Muizzu had announced during his campaign that the airport would be built during his term.
MTCC was also contracted to reclaim land for the airport during a previous administration, under the name Capital Marine and Construction. That contract, worth MVR 653 million, involved reclaiming 44.70 hectares of land. However, the project was not completed as planned.
