The airport in Fuvahmulah has been temporarily closed due to a problem with its fire truck, while the RTL ferry service between Fuvahmulah and Addu has also been suspended because of a technical issue, leaving residents without immediate transport options.
Authorities confirmed the closure of the airport, which has led to the cancellation of scheduled flights to and from Fuvahmulah. The disruption has affected both tourists and local residents travelling between Fuvahmulah and Malé.
According to flight information published for Velana International Airport (VIA), a flight scheduled to depart Malé for Fuvahmulah at 3:35 p.m. Tuesday and return at 6:55 p.m. has been cancelled.
The RTL speedboat service, which connects Fuvahmulah with the nearest airport in Addu, was also suspended due to a technical problem. The suspension left passengers with no alternative means of travel.
A local source said the cancellations could result in tourists missing onward international connections.
The daily transport schedule included only one RTL ferry service between Fuvahmulah and Addu Tuesday. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which operates the service, has not yet commented on the disruption.
Residents and tourism operators have raised concerns that the combined suspension of both air and sea services has left the city without reliable transport links.
