Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Assembly member and GA. Villingili constituency president Hussain Hassan was arrested by police on Wednesday and released on Thursday after being produced before the Criminal Court.
Hussain, a former journalist, was detained after taking photographs of a police operation. Police said he was arrested for entering the scene of a drug operation, taking photos and videos, and attempting to document evidence despite being instructed not to interfere with their work.
In a message, police stated that Hussain argued with officers at the scene and continued to attempt to take images of evidence, prompting his arrest.
Relatives of Hussain claimed he was ordered by police officers to delete the photographs before being taken into custody. They further alleged that he was mistreated while being transported in a police vehicle.
Atoll Times contacted police for comment regarding the allegations of assault, but no response had been provided at the time of publication.
