The Maldives Immigration has announced that the passport card service has been temporarily suspended due to system upgrades.

The agency said on Wednesday that services will remain unavailable while the upgrade is in progress.

The passport card was first introduced in 2017 under the government of former President Abdulla Yameen. It functions as a MasterCard debit and prepaid card, as well as providing Allied Insurance coverage.

In addition, the passport card can be used for e-gate services at airports and serves as a secondary identification document.
