A power outage occurred in parts of Hulhumalé Phase 2 early Sunday morning following an attempt to damage a STELCO substation, the utility company said.

The outage, which began around 3:30am, affected areas including MPL towers, Vinares, and several Hiyaa towers. STELCO confirmed that part of the network feeder was disrupted due to tampering at the substation.

Power was restored to the affected areas by 4:56am. The company reported the incident to the relevant authorities and said measures were being taken to address such cases and prevent future occurrences.

“STELCO strongly appeals to the authorities to continue sharing information about such acts with the relevant authorities to prevent such acts from happening again,” the company said in a statement.

The company noted that there have been previous cases of damage to transformers and attempted thefts. It also warned that interfering with high-voltage transformers poses significant risks, including severe injury or death.

Last year, a man died after being electrocuted while attempting to damage a STELCO high-voltage transformer.
