The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that former President Mohamed Nasheed’s office did not submit an official request for a pass to enter the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Nasheed, who is currently in the United States to attend the UN General Assembly, said on Monday through his office that he had been denied the necessary permits to access the UN building.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry said Nasheed is being accorded the respect given to all former Presidents of the Maldives. It added that arrangements for his international visits are coordinated with the relevant authorities of the host countries.
The ministry further stated that it will continue to facilitate arrangements for former Presidents of the Maldives in line with established procedures.
Nasheed’s office had earlier said he sought to attend official events at the UN as a former President, former Speaker of Parliament and former Member of Parliament, and that the Ministry had refused to obtain the required pass.
