The integrated public ferry network (RTL project) has been launched in Thaa Atoll, expanding high-speed ferry services to the 12th atoll under the initiative.

President Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the service at a ceremony held in Th. Veymandoo on Wednesday. The service will be operated by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) using two high-speed ferries.

According to MTCC, services will cover five routes within the atoll, operating six days a week. Ferry schedules are available through the RTL mobile application and website.

Familiarisation trips will be conducted from Saturday until 2 October, after which fares will be charged.

The RTL network is part of the government’s project to establish a nationwide ferry service. While Thaa Atoll has now joined the network, services are yet to begin in eight other atolls. MTCC said preparations are ongoing under the guidance of the Ministry of Transport.

Current RTL service areas include:

  • Zone 1: Haa Alif, Haa Dhaal, and Shaviyani Atolls

  • Zone 2: Noonu, Raa, Baa, and Lhaviyani Atolls

  • Zone 4: Thaa Atoll

  • Zone 5: Gaafu Alif and Gaafu Dhaal Atolls

  • Zone 6: Fuvahmulah and Addu
