Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel has described Israel’s actions against Palestinians as a violation of international law and one of the gravest crises of the century.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York on Sunday, Dr Khaleel said powerful nations were undermining the international system and acting without regard for established rules in their foreign relations.
He referred to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, saying that more than 66,000 civilians had been killed, over half of them women and children. He also highlighted the forced settlements in the West Bank and the displacement of Palestinians from their land.
The minister said Israel had repeatedly violated international law as well as resolutions passed by the UN Security Council and General Assembly. He criticised countries that continue to arm and fund Israel while positioning themselves as defenders of human rights.
“These actions demonstrate that Palestinians are being denied equality, the right to life and freedom,” Dr Khaleel said.
He added that assaults on civilians cannot be used as a weapon of war, and that indiscriminate attacks, imprisonment, and killings would create a precedent for repetition.
Dr Khaleel further noted that Israel had extended its use of force beyond Palestine to countries including Qatar, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Tunisia and Iran.
