The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that a referendum will be held on 25 October to decide on changes to the composition or jurisdiction of the Addu City Council.
The vote follows a petition submitted by some residents of Addu seeking amendments to the current structure of the city council. In response, the cabinet decided on Sunday to conduct the referendum later this month, choosing between the 24th and 25th of October.
According to the announcement published in the Government Gazette on Wednesday, polling will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the same day. Counting will begin 30 minutes after the close of polls.
“The polling time will not be extended unless voting is disrupted or obstructed by unforeseen circumstances,” the EC said in its statement.
The official results of the referendum will be announced on 26 October.
The referendum will be conducted in Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo, the three islands that formally requested to establish separate councils.
Currently, Addu City operates under a single city council, which administers all connected islands. Residents of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, which are geographically separate from the main cluster of islands, have frequently advocated for independent local councils.
