Parliament on Tuesday approved three nominees proposed by the Independent Institutions Committee to serve on the newly established Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC). Among those appointed is Safa Shafeeq, former Chairperson of the now-dissolved Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom).
The MMBC, created under the new media regulation act, comprises seven members. Four represent the media sector—two from broadcasting and two from online media—while three members are appointed by Parliament.
The Independent Institutions Committee evaluated eight candidates for the three parliamentary appointments. The nominees who secured more than 75 per cent marks were:
-
Mohamed Farsath (90.50%)
-
Safa Shafeeq (88.88%)
-
Aminath Sarahath Izzath, former Broadcom member (87.88%)
A total of 63 members participated in Tuesday’s vote. Fifty-four members voted in favour of confirming the three nominees, while nine voted against.
The four positions representing the media sector in the MMBC received limited public response during the open application process. As the number of applicants matched the number of available seats, those positions were filled without competition.
