The Independent Institutions Committee of Parliament has decided to appoint former Media Council Secretary General Mohamed Farsath as the Chairman of the newly established Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission.

Under the new Media Regulation Act, Parliament holds the authority to appoint the Chairperson of the Commission. The matter was referred to the Independent Institutions Committee for review on Wednesday.

The committee interviewed all members of the commission on Thursday before making its decision. Following the interviews, members of the committee unanimously agreed to appoint Farsath as Chair. The decision will now be submitted to Parliament for a vote.

Farsath is one of three members of the seven-member commission appointed by Parliament. During the evaluation process, he received the highest score among the nominees, securing 90.50 per cent.

The other Parliament-appointed members include former Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) President Safa Shafeeq, who scored 88.88 per cent, and former Broadcom member Aminath Sarahath Izzath, who scored 87.88 per cent.

Applications for commission membership representing the media sector received limited interest. As a result, the four media-representative seats were filled without competition, as the number of applicants matched the available positions.

The members representing broadcasters are Abdul Aziz Ibrahim and Zam’ath Ahmed Waheed, while Simaha Naseem and Hussain Sageef represent other media outlets.
