Robbery at Velana airport: Over $100,000 stolen from BML briefcase

A briefcase containing over USD 100,000 belonging to the Bank of Maldives (BML) was stolen early Monday morning at Velana International Airport (VIA).
The incident occurred at around 4:45 a.m. along the walkway connecting the bar terminal to the new terminal. According to police, masked individuals seized the briefcase after threatening a security officer with a knife.
Reserve police personnel were present at the scene at the time of the robbery.
Reliable sources told Atoll Times that the stolen briefcase contained U.S. dollars that BML had transported to be issued to passengers departing from the Maldives. The value of the stolen cash exceeds MVR 2 million at the prevailing market rate.
Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway into the incident.
