Nasheed says funding should not delay MDP election
Speaking to supporters in Kinbidhoo, Nasheed said an early conclusion to the election would benefit the party.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called for the Maldivian Democratic Party chairperson election to proceed as scheduled, saying supporters are willing to assist financially if needed.
Nasheed, who is contesting the post, made the remarks after acting chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa proposed postponing the election.
In a message sent to the MDP National Council WhatsApp group, Ghafoor requested a delay to both the chairperson election and constituency-level internal polls.
He cited concerns that holding the elections now could affect party unity and weaken efforts to hold the government accountable.
He also said the party had not yet received state funding allocated for this year and lacked the resources to conduct elections and manage operations.
Speaking to supporters in Kinbidhoo, Nasheed said an early conclusion to the election would benefit the party.
“Financial challenges can be overcome through collective contribution. There are many individuals, including members of the business community, who are ready to support the party financially,” he said.
Nasheed added that party unity is maintained through competitive internal elections.
“Unity within the party is maintained by holding competitive elections where winners take leadership, and those who are unsuccessful support the outcome,” he said.
He said he entered the race to win, but not to sideline any person or faction.
“There is space for everyone within this party. Nevertheless, we must identify who the members choose to lead and understand the current sentiment of the general membership through the electoral process,” he said.
Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, the other declared candidate, has also opposed postponement of the election.
The MDP chairperson election is scheduled for 12 June.
