He added that the party had failed to adequately explain past political struggles to younger generations.

Former Maldivian Democratic Party Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said on Thursday night that the party no longer possesses the level of commitment and political energy it had during its early years in opposition.

Speaking at an internal MDP campaign rally held at Artificial Beach, Fayyaz said the party would face difficulties in changing the current administration unless it regained the same determination that existed during its earlier political movement.

Fayyaz stated that the efforts currently being carried out under the “Bodu Badhalu” or “Great Change” movement were intended to continue the political work that began several decades ago.

According to him, the current political environment has enabled what he described as authoritarian-style governance through electoral processes established under democratic reforms achieved in previous years.

Fayyaz said one of the main obstacles facing the opposition was the decline in political engagement among young people and the inability to communicate the political conditions experienced in earlier periods.

“We have forgotten the oppressive conditions of those days. We are now seeing those same conditions returning to haunt us,” he said.

“Today's youth cannot empathise with the situation the Maldives was in back then.”

He added that the party had failed to adequately explain past political struggles to younger generations.

“Even as MDP, we have not been able to convey the state of the country during that period to the youth,” Fayyaz said.

He further stated that a lack of youth participation in politics would make efforts to change the administration of President Mohamed Muizzu more difficult.

Fayyaz also argued that political change alone would not be sufficient unless broader ideological changes also take place.

Referring to comments made by Meekail Ahmed Naseem, who is contesting for the MDP chairperson position, Fayyaz said young people were not primarily seeking audits of party finances or younger leadership figures.

Instead, he said they were looking for leadership capable of addressing national challenges, adding that former President Mohamed Nasheed was best positioned to lead those efforts.

“Today, we stand here having overcome fear because of MDP. It is MDP that can once again bring transformation to the Maldives,” Fayyaz said.

He added that reforms within the country would require unity within the party itself.

Fayyaz concluded by saying the Maldives currently faced an opportunity for political change, but argued that such an opportunity could only be realised if the MDP regained internal unity and leadership under Nasheed.
