Leevan Ali Nasir, a journalist with Adhadhu, was released on Friday after completing a prison sentence imposed for contempt of court.

Leevan had been sentenced to 10 days in prison for violating a gag order issued by the Criminal Court.

The court order was issued following a request by the Prosecutor General’s Office in connection with defamation charges filed against Adhadhu CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and Managing Editor Hassan Mohamed.

The order prohibited public discussion or reporting related to the case.

Leevan was found in violation of the order after reporting on the issuance of the gag order itself.

He was sentenced on the 12th of this month, and his sentence concluded on Friday.

Another Adhadhu journalist, Mohamed Shahuzan, was also sentenced for contempt of court in relation to the same order.

Shahuzan received a 15-day prison sentence after asking President Mohamed Muizzu a question related to the case during a press conference at the President’s Office.

Meanwhile, court proceedings in the defamation case against Fiyaz and Hassan are ongoing.
