Former President Mohamed Nasheed said on Monday night that the current administration would be removed before the end of the year through a parliamentary no-confidence motion supported by members of the ruling People's National Congress.
Nasheed made the remarks during a campaign event in Malé for Abdullah Sodiq, the candidate of the Maldivian Democratic Party in the upcoming Hithadhoo South by-election.
Speaking at the gathering held at the MDP headquarters, Nasheed said a no-confidence motion against President Mohamed Muizzu would be submitted to Parliament within this year.
According to Nasheed, the motion would include signatures from several PNC members.
“This administration must be changed before the end of the year. Do not be concerned; God willing, we will secure a two-thirds majority in the Parliament to pass a vote of no confidence,” Nasheed said.
Nasheed, who previously served as Speaker of Parliament, also referred to the disqualification of former Hithadhoo South MP Mohamed Sinan, stating that it formed part of a wider political strategy.
He further claimed that several PNC parliamentarians would eventually support the motion against the President.
Nasheed also said his recent return to Malé from Ghana was linked to efforts aimed at political reform and stabilising the country.
“God willing, we will remove this administration before the end of this year. Our efforts to elect Sobe and the strategic removal of the previous member are all parts of this plan,” he said.
“Our future actions will also be deliberate. It is not just about PNC members signing against President Muizzu; they will also cast their votes accordingly.”
