The campaign team of former President Mohamed Nasheed has denied claims that it filed a case in the Civil Court of Maldives to challenge the election timeline for the chairperson race of the Maldivian Democratic Party.

The case was submitted by lawyer Abdulla Shairu, who argued that the timeline was issued in violation of party regulations.

In a statement, Nasheed’s campaign said the case was filed by Shairu in his individual capacity and not on behalf of the campaign.

“The reports circulating that the case filed against MDP in the Civil Court today was initiated by President Mohamed Nasheed’s campaign are false,” the statement said.

The campaign added that such claims could affect the conduct of the party’s internal election process.

According to the statement, the legal challenge is based on two main arguments. It claims that the election committee acted independently in organising the poll without guidance from the Appeals Committee, in breach of Article 46 of the party’s charter. It also seeks an order requiring the party leadership and the election committee to comply with the charter.

The campaign said its priority is to ensure that party members are able to vote at the earliest opportunity.

“We believe that trust and legitimacy within the party can only be established through elections,” the statement said.

The campaign also said it would continue to provide updates on its activities and decisions.

Meanwhile, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, Member of Parliament for Galolhu South and a candidate in the election, criticised the move to challenge the timeline in court, stating that such action is not consistent with the party’s practices.
