Muizzu says new phase begins in Maldives–Sri Lanka relations
He said economic cooperation formed a central part of the discussions.
President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday said a new phase has begun in relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka following the signing of bilateral agreements.
The President made the remarks during a ceremony at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, where he and the First Lady were received at the start of the state visit.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake attended the ceremony.
Muizzu said discussions were held across several sectors and that the agreements signed would be followed by further engagement between the two countries.
“Our objective is now very clear: to deliver results and ensure implementation. We must guarantee that the citizens of both nations reap the full benefits of the agreements signed today,” he said.
He said economic cooperation formed a central part of the discussions.
The President also referred to the Maldives–Sri Lanka Business Forum scheduled during the visit, stating that it would provide an opportunity for engagement between businesses from both countries.
He said discussions were ongoing on the possible introduction of services by Bank of Maldives in Sri Lanka.
He added that talks were also under way to facilitate the entry of Maldivian fish products into the Sri Lankan market.
Muizzu said both sides were working to ensure that trade and economic ties benefit both countries.
He said the Maldives would continue efforts to strengthen cooperation with Sri Lanka and focus on implementation of agreed measures.
