The Government of the Maldives has welcomed a preliminary agreement reached between the United States and Iran aimed at ending hostilities and addressing key issues between the two countries.

According to information released on Monday, the agreement includes measures to cease ongoing confrontations, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the blockade imposed by the United States on Iran. The agreement is scheduled to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Maldivian government welcomed the understanding reached by the two countries, including provisions intended to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and resolve outstanding matters through dialogue.

“The Maldives considers this development an important step towards reducing tensions and advancing peace, security and stability in the region and beyond," the ministry said in its statement.

The government also expressed appreciation for the commitment shown by both parties in pursuing dialogue and diplomacy to address their differences and concerns.

The statement further acknowledged the role played by Pakistan and Qatar in facilitating discussions between the two sides. It also recognised the contributions of other Gulf states and international partners that supported the dialogue process.

According to the ministry, the efforts of the mediators and supporting partners helped create the conditions necessary for the discussions that led to the agreement.

The Maldives reiterated its support for diplomatic engagement and peaceful resolution of disputes as a means of promoting regional and international stability.
