The Maldives has co-sponsored a resolution submitted to the United Nations Security Council by Gulf countries and Jordan concerning the Strait of Hormuz.

The resolution was introduced by Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Jordan.

The proposal seeks to ensure the safety, security and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and to protect international trade and global supply chains.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Maldives’ decision to co-sponsor the resolution does not affect the country’s established position on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea or the rights and jurisdiction granted to archipelagic states under international maritime law.

The ministry stated that the Maldives co-sponsored the resolution with a formal reservation to ensure that the move would not require the country to accept any interpretation that could affect its national interests, maritime jurisdiction or sovereign rights as an island nation.

The Foreign Ministry also stated that the Maldives continues to support efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Gulf region to prevent further instability.

According to the ministry, the government also recognises the importance of addressing challenges affecting international trade and shipping routes in order to reduce wider economic impacts.
