Responsibility for maintaining the resident register in Malé lies with the Malé City Council.

Mohamed Ibrahim has called on Adam Azim to address delays in resident registration for individuals allocated flats under Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation.

Responsibility for maintaining the resident register in Malé lies with the Malé City Council.

Reports indicate that the council has not processed registrations for FDC flat recipients, citing the nature of tenancy agreements used during the handover of units.

During a parliamentary sitting, Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Abdulla Muththalib said the delay was not due to government action but to the council’s refusal to process applications.

The minister said the use of a rent-to-own model does not provide legal grounds to deny registration under existing policies.

He added that the delay was affecting residents.

Following the session, Mohamed Ibrahim sent a letter to the mayor referring to the minister’s remarks and attaching earlier correspondence from the housing ministry dated 22 April 2024.

The ministry’s letter instructed the council to include FDC flat residents in the register in line with applicable regulations, subject to authorisation from FDC.

It also called on FDC to provide the required clearance to enable the process.

In his letter, Mohamed Ibrahim said the council’s position had been identified as the main reason for the delay.

“As this matter directly affects the rights of citizens, I urge both parties to engage in dialogue and reach a resolution,” he said.
