The Maldives Police Service has requested the Prosecutor General's Office to review a decision not to prosecute a Maldivian man arrested in connection with the alleged sale of child pornography using cryptocurrency, according to Dhauru.

The suspect, identified by police as 22-year-old Adam Adlan Latheef from Moonimage in Th. Vilufushi, was arrested on the 5th of last month.

Police publicly disclosed his identity on April 20.

Sources told Dhauru that the legal deadline for filing charges against Adlan expires on Tuesday. If charges are not filed within the required period, he is expected to be released from custody.

According to information obtained by Dhauru, the PG Office informed police last Thursday that it would not proceed with prosecution at that stage.

Police previously stated that the suspect was arrested following an investigation into reports of child pornography transactions conducted through a Binance cryptocurrency wallet.

According to police:

  • Investigators identified transfers from the suspected wallet to Adlan’s cryptocurrency account

  • Electronic devices seized during the investigation allegedly contained child pornography and videos depicting the sexual abuse of minors

The police have since requested a formal review of the prosecution decision.

Authorities stated that crimes involving the exploitation of minors and child pornography remain a priority for law enforcement agencies.

Legal experts speaking to Dhauru also expressed concern over the possibility of suspects in such cases being released without prosecution.

Responding to questions regarding the matter, Public Prosecutor and PG Office spokesperson Ahmed Shafeeu said a final decision had not yet been made in the case.
