Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem has said that no member of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) needs to apologise to former President Mohamed Nasheed following his departure from the party.
Speaking during the MDP chairman election campaign Saturday, Meekail responded to remarks made by Nasheed at a meeting held in R. Dhuvaafaru.
At the meeting, Nasheed said there would be no one more saddened than himself when he had to leave the MDP. He also apologised for leaving the party and asked ordinary members to apologise to him.
However, Meekail, who is contesting the MDP chairperson election alongside Nasheed, said he did not believe ordinary members should apologise on behalf of anyone other than Nasheed himself.
He said MDP members had made sacrifices over many years and that party leaders reached their positions through the support of ordinary members.
“Both Nasheed and [former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih] were brought to the presidency by ordinary MDP members. They receive honour and privileges because of MDP members,” Meekail said.
Meekail described Nasheed’s departure from the MDP ahead of the 2023 presidential election as disregarding thousands of party members for political purposes.
“In short, there is something that ordinary MDP members should apologise for,” he said.
At the meeting in Dhuvaafaru, Nasheed outlined reasons for leaving the MDP.
He said that after the MDP won 65 parliamentary seats in 2019, then President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stopped speaking to him at the end of that year despite their long association.
Nasheed also referred to the bombing attack against him on 6 May 2021 and criticised the investigation into the incident.
“You can see how the investigation went about placing bombs in three places and blowing up someone,” he said.
Nasheed further referred to the expulsion of former MP Ali Azim from the MDP after the presidential primary. He also said attempts were being made to remove Hassan Latheef, Ilyas Labeeb and Eva Abdulla from the party.
“If I am ashamed, I will go to the committee that takes action to remove him,” Nasheed said.
