The Maldives Police Service on Friday warned that legal action would be taken against those involved in violence or retaliatory acts targeting police officers.

The statement followed an incident in Foakaidhoo on Monday night at about 10:30 pm, when a motorcycle belonging to a police officer was allegedly set on fire.

Police said initial findings indicate the fire was a deliberate act directed at the officer.

According to the statement, the motorcycle was damaged beyond repair. Damage was also reported to other property, including the gate of the residence.

Police said acts intended to obstruct officers in carrying out their duties or intimidate law enforcement personnel would not affect policing operations.

The service said the matter is being investigated as a high-priority serious crime.

Authorities added that efforts were under way to identify those responsible and bring them before the courts.

Police also condemned acts of intimidation against officers and said such incidents pose a threat to community safety and security.
