More than MVR 370,000 was lost through various fraudulent schemes last week, according to the Maldives Police Service.

From Sunday to Saturday, 35 cases of fraud and scams were reported nationwide. Police said MVR 372,000 was obtained through these activities, of which MVR 148,000 has been recovered.

The reported cases involved five main types of scams:

  • Online business or e-commerce fraud: 13 cases

  • Impersonation fraud: 9 cases

  • Scams conducted under the pretext of money laundering: 6 cases

  • Employment-related scams: 6 cases

  • Other forms of fraud: 1 case

Police noted that scammers often use phone calls, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, online messaging applications, and phishing links to deceive victims.

Authorities added that, with the involvement of the Maldivian police, several major international scam networks have recently been uncovered, leading to multiple arrests.
